“Meteorite” finds frontman Olly Alexander head over heels in love with a significant other he may have just met on the dancefloor of the local nightclub – let’s keep the identity ambiguous for movie soundtrack sake – but quickly jumps ahead of himself by allowing a possible one-night stand to develop into much more, probably more than what was initially intended. Those young, love strung actions fit in perfectly with the song’s production choices and the film it’s meant to support.
If the premise of the new track is meant to embody the experience of jumping into a situation head first, without any thought of potential consequence, Years & Years have properly expressed the joy and uncertainty in the sparkling imagery of the songwriting. “Reckless, what I'm heading for, lights flash and I hear a roar, one touch and you're so powerful, you're burning through the night,” Alexander belts on a verse, before the chorus of loving like it’s the last night together explodes through.
With the exception of a revamped Tove Lo-assisted “Desire” remix, the endearing and reckless “Meteorite” is the first taste of new music we’ve received from the trio since 2015. If listeners are to take the new release as an indication of the sound and style Years & Years are moving forward for their highly anticipated sophomore album, then they should be pleasantly satisfied that not much has actually changed. Except for a slight disco-esque sheen over the production, it’s typical electronica euphoria.
Years & Years are not yet a huge music staple stateside. A contribution to the Bridget Jones film soundtrack won’t dramatically change their standing, however, an enjoyable, catchy and beyond adorable pop cut like “Meteorite” should not go unappreciated. Alexander might be taking the idea of love at first sight way too seriously, but to hear the apparent cheer and charm in his vocal performance paired with a dance-worthy beat is pure delight.
